Saul was doing what he thought was right. He was raised in a certain religion and I am sure his parents had to be so proud that he was on fire!! God didn't agree and wasn't proud.
If God were to directly intervene in your life to get you to stop doing something you thought was right from your religious upbringing, what do you think it would be?

WHOA! Now, THAT is a good question! Where do you come up with this stuff?!
But you didn't answer it!?!
I don't know. I guess I feel like the things I/we do that are from my upbringing aren't really right or wrong....unless of course it keeps someone from knowing Jesus. (You know, like we argue about it!) Saul was KILLING people! That's not exactly the same as instruments/no instruments!
I wasn't even thinking about instruments. I wonder if he wouldn't rail on our attitudes about "visitors". I wonder if he would criticize us for our buildings and programs and for not using much of that money to meet peoples needs. I wonder if he would chastise us for "playing church" and then going on with the rest of our lives.
NO FAIR !!! You ARE going to call my mom aren't you! :)
I second the good question comment of Danna's.
I think that my answer, though I admit I am still in the process of giving it up, is the concept of being the "only ones..." .
This is so 'stone age' to some, and heretical to others, but I find myself still in the process of both confidently not embracing some attitudes that were unfounded and honestly in some forms arrogant, that I was raised with, and yet being equally confident of some teachings I cannot abandon, and yet don't always find unity in. So I stand I guess still in this gap (or rather walk) as I grow and learn, trying at least to do what I am confident in with all humility. I listened this morning to Jesus in the Gospel of Mark talk to the disciples about a similar question, and I hear and embrace His answer, but still struggle with my ability to discern all it's applications.
Do NOT call my mother. Just kidding. She'd just tell you not to call her mother.
What, Doug stirring the pot? I can't believe it.
I'd say the paternalistic know-it-all attitude we sometimes have, both as Americans and American Christians. I know many Americans go to foreign lands (or even just to their neighbors where they live) to teach the truth. Now if they mean that the truth is God's love through Jesus Christ and the powerful work of the Holy Spirit which can all be learned about through the inspired word of God then great. But if the truth is you should worship in this manner, this many times a week, and don't do (name about 20 things here) then it is often misleading, even though we've been taught that it's right. This can give a very arrogant, un-Christlike message to others. The fact that it's important to our own culture (seen when certain scriptures are taken out of context or left out all together) doesn't necessarily make it God's views.
Another one... keep your church facilities in top condition at all expense even though there are poor suffering all around you.
I better stop or I'll be here all day.
